BOSTON (WBZ-AM) -- Surrounded by doctors, nurses, and children at Boston Children's Hospital, Sen. Ed Markey slammed Republicans for putting the tax bill above the Children's Health Insurance Program, or CHIP.

CHIP runs out of funding in mid-January, and Sen. Markey is not pleased.

"A one-trillion-dollar tax break giveaway to the wealthiest corporations and the wealthiest individuals in our country, and they refuse to pass the legislation that provides health care for the neediest and the sickest children in our country," Markey said.

The program covers about 175,000 children in the state.

Markey praised Gov. Charlie Baker for pledging to fund CHIP but pointed out it will cost the state a lot of money.
