Happy birthday, Pete Frates!
The Beverly native and inspiration behind the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge turned 33 years old on Thursday.
The challenge has helped to raise over $220 million for ALS research to-date.
“33 years ago today, God blessed our family and many more with John Peter Frates III. HAPPY 33rd Birthday to our leader, our inspiration and our heart! We LOVE you!!” Frates mother said in a Facebook post Thursday morning.
Mayor Marty Walsh proclaimed September 5, 2017 Pete Frates Day in the City of Boston, as a symbol of his courage and determination.
Frates was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s disease in 2012.
