BOSTON (WBZ-AM) -- Josh McDaniels decided to back out of an opportunity to become the next Head Coach of the Indianapolis Colts, just hours after his appointment was announced.
WBZ NewsRadio 1030's Adam Kaufman caught up with Boston Sports Journal editor Greg Bedard for some insight on why McDaniels made the decision to stay.
"It was very stunning," Bedard said. "As of 24 hours ago, Josh McDaniels was going to be the next coach of the Indianapolis Colts."

Bedard said Patriots Head Coach Bill Belichick and the Pats ownership reached out to McDaniels at the last moment to ask what they could do to keep him around--the kind of conversation he says the Patriots don't really have often.
"I think a lot of it just had to do with the fact that, especially Belichick, but the Patriots just don't talk about these things--future, what's going on, we love you, we don't want you to go anywhere, stay--they have a Super Bowl to win, or to try to win," he said. "They don't waste any energy on that other stuff. I'm sure it would have been nice to Josh, it would have brought clarity to Josh earlier."
Bedard said that, once the season ended, the best move for the Patriots was to keep him around--but what was McDaniels' motivation?
"I think it's just the sort of situation where, people saying that you're wanted, that you're valued" means a lot, Bedard said.
That, and he thinks the Pats ownership has at least told McDaniels he's at the front of the list to replace Belichick once the legendary head coach retires--whenever that may be.
The two also discussed Belichick's future, and what McDaniels' means for the rest of the team.
