DANVERS (WBZ-AM) -- After bringing back two silvers in the past two Winter Olympics, the U.S. Women's Hockey Team picked up the gold--which means a celebration in Danvers for a local hockey hero.
Meghan Duggan, the team's captain, is a Danvers native. There are signs in local business windows wishing her luck.
Locals tell WBZ NewsRadio 1030's Ben Parker there's no question she's the pride of the town.
"Yes she is, big time," said Cindy Nelson, who has lived in the town her entire life. "I'm looking forward to having her wave the flag on the fire engine."
Nelson said there's been a lot of buzz about Duggan and the games around town, and said she plans to be there when the medal comes home.
"They've celebrated every time she's come back from the Olympics, so this one's gonna be even better," she said.
Bob Nucci has lived in Danvers for 20 years, having moved there arount the last time the U.S. Women's team won gold.
He said this win is a testament to how great an athlete Duggan is, and that not a lot of people can say they have three Olympic medals.
"You should be proud of someone who's worked that hard," he said. "She's an exceptional athlete, and I think it's kinda neat to have a local person that's done so well."
Pat Vitali stayed up to watch the game. It was a close one, but he said he wasn't worried, and thought a gold was inevitable this time.
"We knew it would be a close game, but her being from Danvers, there's no second place allowed," he said.
