Medford School Superintendent Announces Early Retirement

MEDFORD, MA (WBZ-AM) –  Roy Belson, The Superintendent of Medford Public Schools is moving up his retirement in response to parents and students angry about the handling of a security issue at the McGlynn Middle School.

The Medford School Committee also ordered a district-wide security audit.

The announcements comes after revelations that a loaded ammunition clip found in the middle school went unreported to police or the public for several weeks and a long closed-door meeting with the school committee.

Revelation that Belson knew about a loaded gun magazine found at the middle school weeks before it was reported to the police had a lot of parents calling for him to step down.

He principal who accidentally threw away the magazine after it had sat in his office unreported is on administrative leave.

It was also announced last night that a new security director will be appointed for Medford Public Schools
