WORCESTER, MA (WBZ-AM) --  An 85-year-old woman is dead following a fire in her split-level home in Worcester early Monday morning.

An off-duty Worcester firefighter, who was on his way into work, saw the fire and was able rescue one of two other residents of the Green Farms road home.

According to a deputy chief, the off-duty firefighter who is a lieutenant helped one of two men who lived in the home out a window.  Responding units were able to rescue other two residents but the woman later died from her injuries.

The deceased woman, her son and her son's husband had lived in the home for several years officials say.

The fire was ultimately put out--but, not before it had done heavy damage to the upstairs bedrooms.

Investigators have not yet determined a cause.
