WORCESTER, MA (WBZ-AM) -- An article speculating on the sexuality of Jesus is putting a Holy Cross professor in the spotlight.
The article is drawing criticism from a student paper and several conservative outlets.
Professor Tat-Siong Benny Liew wrote the piece in 2009, five years before he joined Holy Cross as chairman of the New Testament studies department.
A Holy Cross spokesman says the paper was not intended for undergraduate study.
Holy Cross President Reverend Philip Burroughs says in a statement that a scholar is free to inquire critique and push boundaries.
While calling Liew a dedicated teacher and engaged scholar, ee added that he strongly disagrees with Liew’s interpretation published in an article on the Gospel of John which was titled in part cross-examining Johns engendering and trans-gendering word across different worlds.
