MASHPEE, Mass. (AP) — Sen. Elizabeth Warren is planning to visit Mashpee to discuss what impact her opioid bill would have on tribal communities.
The Democrat has joined with Democratic Rep. Elijah Cummings of Maryland to file legislation that would dedicate $100 billion in federal funding over the next 10 years to help communities battle the addiction crisis that claims tens of thousands of lives each year.
On Saturday, Warren will tour the Mashpee Wampanoag Health Service Unit and participate in a round-table discussion.
Warren said that under her proposal, Massachusetts would get around $55 million per year in state formula grants and the hardest-hit communities in Massachusetts would receive an estimated $64.5 million in annual funding.
State health officials earlier this year estimated there were 1,977 opioid-related overdose deaths in Massachusetts last year.
