Shots Fired At Officers During Haverhill-Windham Police Chase

HAVERHILL (WBZ-AM) -- A car chase Tuesday night led to shots being fired at police, an overnight manhunt, and the arrest of two suspects.

The chase began in Haverhill around 9:30 p.m., when an officer on patrol spotted someone firing a handgun from a car in the Acre neighborhood.

When police pursued the car, shots were fired at Haverhill officers.

The car eventually crashed on Route 111 in Windham, New Hampshire, after a pursuit made by Massachusetts and New Hampshire State Police as well as several local police departments.

Manuel Soto, 20 of Haverhill, was arrested at the scene of the crash and charged with one count of reckless conduct--but a second man ran into the woods.

That man, Javonnie Chambers, 21 of Burlington, New Hampshire, was found and arrested by NH State Police near Exit 4 off I-93 in Londonderry, New Hampshire after a manhunt.

Windham Police Captain Michael Caron told WBZ NewsRadio 1030's Ben Parker a Glock 9mm pistol was also recovered.

"A weapon was recovered from the vehicle," he said. "Not from the person that was arrested--it was in the passenger compartment of the vehicle."

Haverhill Police said none of the officers involved were harmed.
