SAUGUS (WBZ-AM) -- One person was killed and five people were hurt when an SUV drove head on into an MBTA bus traveling toward Lynn Sunday afternoon.

Authorities said Monday morning that 47-year-old Kathleen Callahan, the woman who was driving the SUV, died.

There were four passengers on the bus at the time. All four passengers and the driver were taken to area hospitals with minor injuries.

Surveillance video from the neighborhood shows a Ford Explorer veering directly into the path of the oncoming Route 429 bus around 3:50 p.m. at Essex and Felton Streets.

Al, who lives in the neighborhood, told WBZ NewsRadio 1030 he tried to help.

"I wasn't the first one on the scene, but there were a number of people, people I knew, from the area that were just trying to assist, just waiting on police and fire to come," he said.

Police believe the SUV may have struck a parked car before hitting the bus.

Part of the road was closed down while police cleared the scene.

The cause of the crash is still being investigated by MBTA Transit Police.
