Man Accused Of Stabbing Wife To Death Charged With Assault Five Years Ago

LAWRENCE (WBZ-AM) -- A case of domestic violence over the weekend led to the death of Yesninia Torres, 28, and the arrest of her husband, Joel Monegro, 32. Now we have learned that the accused attacker, Monegro, was charged with assault and battery on Torres five years ago.

On Tuesday morning Joel Monegro was taken into custody at Tufts Medical Center where he is recovering from what may be self-inflicted stab wounds. Monegro is accused of stabbing his wife, Yesinia Torres, to death on Monday (5/28). He will likely be arraigned in his bed.

WBZ's Carl Stevens reports that Monegro was charged with assault and battery on his wife five years ago. The police report indicates he was enraged, attacking and punching the mother off his two sons. Torres later told officers that Monegro had been physical with her in the past. Ultimately, that case was dismissed.
