BOSTON (WBZ-AM) -- If you're a soccer fan, it's a great day--the 2026 World Cup is coming to America, with the US hosting 60 of the 80 games.

WBZ NewsRadio 1030's Adam Kaufman spoke with former New England Revolution star and US Men's National Team forward Charlie Davies about the bid--the first time since 1994 that the games return to the United States.

"It's extremely significant," said Davies, who is now an ambassador for his former team. "It's going to take the sport to a whole 'nother level. We saw what 1994 did for soccer in the United States."

Davies said that, growing up in New Hampshire, the game took a backseat to basketball, baseball, and football. But after, it was all over the place, and US Major League Soccer was developed as a result.

"I think after the 2026 World Cup, people are going to be obsessed with the game," he said. "And it brings everyone together. I think that's the magic of the sport, how it's able to bring everyone from all the different walks of life together, showing passion, you get to represent your country proudly. I think this is just going to be an amazing event for the United States."

Kaufman and Davies also spoke about soccer's growing popularity, his pick to win the 2018 World Cup, the possibility we might see games at Gillette Stadium, what US Women's Soccer has done for the sport, and more.
