BOSTON, MA (WBZ-AM) -- The cruise ship Odyssey collides with several boats in the Boston harbor as hundreds of passengers including students from Newton were on board.
The odyssey will remain docked as investigators with the U.S. Coast Guard are interviewing the crew and inspecting the ship to determine what happened.
“He did not have control of the vessel for a short time and that's when he had to striking the sailboats,” said Petty Officer Andrew Barresi with the U.S. Coast Guard Boston Station.
He says the ship didn’t travel far from Rowes Wharf, when a power outage to the propulsion system left the captain unable to steer the vessel.
“It actually regained power fairly quickly was able to safely get back to the pier,” Barresi said.
A man on one of the smaller vessels reportedly jumped from boat to boat in order to avoid falling into the water during this collision course.
That man and all 328 passengers aboard the odyssey, including students from Day Middle School, were not injured.
