BOSTON, MA (WBZ-AM)  -- It has not been smooth sailing for the steamship authority in the last  couple of days.

The 6 a.m. ferry trip from woods hole to vineyard haven and then the 7 a.m. return trip were canceled Thursday morning because of a problem with the emergency generator on Wednesday on board the Motor Vessel Island Home.

Problems with the very same ferry caused two cancellations and delays. It's been an unusually bad year with more than 500 cancellations in just the first four months of 2018.

steamship authority spokesperson Sean Driscoll tells WBZ NewsRadio1030 that at this time of year boats are typically running at capacity.

The steamship authority board ordered a consulting firm to review its operations that's expected to take 12 weeks at a cost of $200,000 and nine of the ten vessels in their fleet are set to be running through the holiday wee barring any unexpected breakdowns.
