SEEKONK (WBZ-AM) -- After complaints from town employees and nearby residents, Seekonk, Rehoboth, and Massachusetts Environmental Police towed several ATVs and dirt bikes from a Seekonk Water Department property where they didn't belong Sunday.

The raid took place on town property off Tower Road in an area known as McHale's Pit, Seekonk Police said in a Facebook post. In total, the department said they handed out $5,000 worth of citations for trespassing, operating without a helmet, unregistered recreational vehicles, and more.

"Massachusetts has some of the most strict recreational vehicle laws in the United States, stemming from tragedies involving these vehicles," the department wrote in their post. "We remind all persons that recreational vehicles must be registered, operators must wear helmets and that recreational vehicles are strictly prohibited from being on Seekonk Water Department property."

The department said they'll continue to monitor the area.
