WEYMOUTH (WBZ-AM) -- Authorities are warning of a scam involving someone falsely claiming to be collecting money for the family of slain Weymouth Police Officer Michael Chesna. Chesna was shot and killed Sunday.

"Always be careful when donating, be sure that you know where your money is going," the Dedham Police Department wrote in a Facebook post Tuesday morning. "Many times telephone solicitors will tell you that it helps groups or individuals in your area but be sure, call your local organization."

They said a legitimate fund had been set up for Chesna's family through Equitable Bank, and that anyone wishing to donate could send a check payable to the Officer Michael Chesna Family Fund. Checks should be addressed to Weymouth Police at 140 Winter St., Weymouth, MA 02188.
