SOUTH BOSTON (WBZ-AM) -- Massachusetts State Police are investigating reports of a sexual assault on Carson Beach. They said a woman reported being raped not far from the McCormack Bath House, around 4:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Police are still working on a description of the suspect, but said a group of homeless men were gathered in the area, and that the attacker was likely one of them. They said the suspect left the area after the assault. The victim was taken to Boston Medical Center.

A woman who lives in the area told WBZ NewsRadio 1030's Ben Parker that the victim told her she had been assaulted, and was asking for help around 6 a.m.

"I was out here by myself, but I called the police to let them handle it," she said. "The police were right up the street."

Steve, who paddleboards in the area in the morning, said he's surprised it happened here, because there are usually many people around.

"I was struck," he said. "Because usually it's nice down here, and the place is mobbed."
