AUBURN, MA (WBZ-AM) -- Massachusetts State Police are investigating why dead body ended up on the Mass Turnpike.
David Procopio, spokesperson with the Massachusetts State Police said that the body was found the westbound side of the Massachusetts Turnpike in Auburn was first reported at about 10 p.m. Wednesday.
There is no overpass nearby. Troopers did not find any unattended vehicles in the area and there were no prior reports of pedestrians on the highway.
They say that The victim had suffered what were described as "severe injuries."
The State Police investigation closed most of the Mass Pike for several hours. The higway re-opened around 2 a.m. on Thursday.
The medical examiner has taken custody of the body to determine the gender as well as the cause and manner of death.
