ROCKPORT (WBZ-AM) -- Rockport Police confirmed Thursday morning that the body of a scuba diver was recovered near Cathedral Rock after a search that began the previous day.
The diver has been tentatively identified as a 47-year-old man from Philadelphia, police said. His name has not yet been released.
The search began Wednesday around 5:15 p.m. near Cathedral Avenue and Green Street after a scuba diver reported that the man he could not find the man he had been diving with. Rockport Police and Fire, State Police, and the U.S. Coast Guard took part in the search
"We've exhausted all of our resources out on the water," Rockport Police Lt. Mark Schmink told reporters. "Very tragic and sad event."
A buoy with an orange flag was placed in the water about 150 yards off the rocky coastline to mark the spot where the diver and his friend had left a raft and a diver's flag.
The search turned to a recovery operation this morning. The diver's body was found around 8:30 a.m.
