Boston Police Joins National Campaign Against Suicide

BOSTON, MA (WBZ-AM) -- Boston Police are marking national suicide awareness in a big way.

Boston Police Commissioner Gross says that suicide is the leading cause of death among law enforcement, despite recent news of violence on Police.

Since he's taken office, Gross says one of this top priorities is to focus on officer wellness and end the stigma associated with mental illness to prevent another officers from taking his or her own life.

The Boston Police Foundation and American Foundation for Suicide Prevention are teaming up to provide additional support for their officers.

That's why officers are getting what's called a lifesavers manual which includes information on suicide risk factors and warning signs.

Officers in the department are also wearing bands over their badges in honor of those who have taken their lives and National Suicide Prevention Week.
