COHASSET, Mass. (AP) — Authorities say a humpback whale calf that was seen floating near the coast of Massachusetts has died.

Police say the dead calf washed ashore Sunday morning in Cohasset. The Center for Coastal Studies says the whale had been spotted floating near Gloucester Friday night.

New England Aquarium spokesman Tony LaCasse says the 2-year-old whale is about 30 to 35 feet long.

LaCasse says crews couldn't secure the whale carcass Sunday because of rough conditions. The aquarium will perform a necropsy before disposing of the body.
