BOSTON (WBZ-AM) -- A new Bankrate survey that ranked the most- and least-valuable college majors finds that degrees in STEM-related programs are pretty solid career choices.
"STEM dominates the top 15 spots, number one being actual science," Adrian Garcia, a Bankrate data analyst, told WBZ NewsRadio 1030's Ben Parker. "The one exception is number 14, public policy."
Garcia said STEM fields have the best pay--as well as low rates of unemployment.
"If you look at number one, it's 2.3 percent, zoology is number two, it's even lower at 1.4," he said.
Those with miscelaneous fine arts degrees are at the bottom for income, and at more than nine percent unemployment. But Garcia said all is not lost for liberal arts grads.
"If you find a way to use your soft skills like communication, teamwork, work ethic that you picked up with your music major or your clinical psychology major, and you can apply it somewhere else, you can still end up with a pretty lucrative salary--at least one that's livable," he said.
