BOSTON (WBZ-AM) - An I-Robot spinoff, Endeavor Robotics, has received a government grant from the defense department to develop and perfect an underground vehicle.
"The capability of robots to operate in that environment and keep people out of harm's way is very important to the military," said CEO Seam Bielat.
The DARPA contract starts with a $1.5 million grant and ends with a $2 million grand prize but Bielat says this is about more than money.
"For us, this is a lot less about the revenue and much more about the opportunity to develop unique technology and unique capabilities that'll serve us going forward and serve the warfighter going forward," Bielat said. "Anywhere where you have subterranean environments where it's difficult to operate because of communications, because of visibility, because of dangerous and hazardous conditions - robots are a great solution and we're excited about being able to push the technology forward."
