FBI Offers Reward For Gold Heist Suspect

WILSON, NC (WBZ-AM) -- Federal investigators have identified a new suspect in a Hollywood-like, three-year-old robbery with Massachusetts ties.

The $10 thousand the FBI is offering for information leading them to 56-year-old Pedro Santamaria is on top of the $50 thousand that trucking company TransValue offered shortly after the 2015 heist.

Santamaria was allegedly part of a gang that used a remote control to disable a truck carrying gold bars from Miami to a Bridgewater processing plant, as it stretched through a desolate stretch of I-95 in North Carolina. The truck’s crew was incapacitated by remote-controlled gas canisters.

The take in the improbable heist? Nearly $5 million.

Two Florida men were already convicted in their part of the robbery in 2016. Authorities hope that this latest reward will help lead them to conviction number three.
