City Of Weymouth Honors Slain Officer At New Hilltop Park

BOSTON (AP) — The city of Weymouth has opened a new park that honors a Massachusetts police officer shot and killed while investigating a car crash and an innocent bystander.

The Boston Globe reports that Weymouth residents recently gathered at King Oak Hill Park overlooking Boston Harbor.

The hilltop park includes two flowering plum trees planted in memory of Weymouth Police Sgt. Michael Chesna and lifelong Weymouth resident Vera Adams.

Chesna, 42, was a native of Weymouth, a city of about 55,000 residents south of Boston. He was shot and killed in July while investigating reports of an erratic driver and a car crash.

The man suspected of killing him, Emmanuel Lopes, also is charged with killing Adams, a 77-year-old bystander.

Lopes, 21, has pleaded not guilty to two counts of murder.
