BOSTON (WBZ-AM) — The annual Fenway Hurling Classic took place Sunday at Fenway Park.
Hurling, Ireland’s national sport, is a game with ancient origins. The tournament features teams from four Irish counties — Clare, Limerick, Cork, and Wexford — battling it out for the Players Champions Cup.
Clare won the tournament in 2017. Limerick is the 2018 All-Ireland champions.
“We’re losing, but we won the big game. That’s all that matters,” Limerick fan Eugene said.
In the game, players use a wooden stick called a hurley to move a ball into their opponent’s goal. Some describe it as a mixture between field hockey, lacrosse, baseball, and soccer.
