DUDLEY, Mass. (WBZ-AM) —The Worcester district attorney’s office is investigating a fatal fire in Dudley. One man died due to the fire.

Court records indicate the owners of the affected home on Dudley Oxford Road are Julie and James Soares. Julie Soares took out a restraining order against her husband in June, claiming he threatened to set her checkbook on fire and kill her cat. She said James was a disabled veteran who experienced extreme rage and paranoia.

A passerby called 911 Tuesday morning to report two cars in the driveway of the home were on fire, according to Fire Chief Dean Kochanowksi.

“We proceeded to put the vehicles out, discovered the house was on fire from the back side. We proceeded to put the house out. It went to a second alarm,” Kochanowski said.

Once firefighters made it into the house, they found a man dead inside. The State Fire Marshall's Office says the victim is believed to have been intimately involved with the start of the fires.
