HAVERHILL (WBZ-AM) -- An eleven-year-old girl from Haverhill died after several days in a coma--and police and the Essex District Attorney's Office are investigating the circumstances that led to her death.

Precious Wallaces, a sixth grader at the Consentino Middle School in Haverhill, was rushed to Lawrence General Hospital early Saturday morning, and eventually taken by medflight to Tufts Medical Center, where she was in a coma and on life support.

Wallaces had been visiting with relatives at a home in Lawrence. A spokesperson for the Essex DA said the family was cooperating with investigators.

Grief counselors are being made available all week at Consentino School to help students deal with the death of their classmate.

Mayor James Fiorentini, who plans to meet with the girl's family, said it was a terrible day for the City of Haverhill.

"I understand she was a fine young girl, had her whole future ahead of her," Fiorentini told WBZ NewsRadio's Ben Parker. "It's just a tragic, tragic day for our city."
