BOSTON (WBZ-AM) -- Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was sworn in as a newly-elected member of the U.S. House of Representatives Thursday morning (Jan. 3), but the 28-year-old Boston University graduate instead made headlines for her role in a 2010 YouTube spoof video.
The original video featured classic clips from The Breakfast Club mashed-up with the 2009 Phoenix hit "Lisztomania". Soon, a group from Brooklyn filmed a shot-for-shot remake, then a San Francisco collective copied them, and a meme was born.
With the Boston skyline as a backdrop, Ocasio-Cortez and her BU Brat Pack created their own version on campus. In the video, Ocasio-Cortez is seen skipping along the roofs of Commonwealth Avenue in a navy blue Boston University tee, borrowing Ally Sheedy's twirling dance moves.
While the video has been on YouTube since September 2010, Ocasio-Cortez' detractors only discovered it recently. In an attempt to shame the Congresswoman, conservative Twitter accounts posted clips of Ocasio-Cortez, labeling her "America's favorite commie know-it-all" and drawing attention to her college nickname, Sandy.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez currently serves as a U.S. Representative for New York's 14th congressional district.
