PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — A Massachusetts man police say was drunk when he caused a fatal crash in Providence on New Year's Day has been arraigned.
Richard Maldonado, of Taunton, Massachusetts, was held on $50,000 bail on Wednesday when he was arraigned in his hospital bed. He remains in fair condition.
Police say the 23-year-old Maldonado ran a stop sign and two red lights at about 1:30 a.m. Tuesday before crashing into another vehicle driven by 63-year-old Evelyn Pagliaro, of Providence.
She was pronounced dead. A 21-year-old man in Maldonado's car was also hurt.
Maldonado is charged with driving under the influence with death resulting, driving to endanger and causing injury, and reckless driving. It's not clear if he has a lawyer.
