LAWRENCE, MA (WBZ-AM) — A Lawrence High School teacher is trying to turn the Merrimack Valley gas fires disaster into a teachable moment.

Lawrence High teacher Shaddai Vargas entered his lesson plan for teaching kids about the Merrimack Valley Gas disaster into a STEM contest & was chosen as the state winner.

He's developed an entire lesson plan around the tragedy and is hoping to spark an interest in science and technology for his students.

Students will now develop a safety device to prevent future gas disasters & enter it into a national contest.
