BOSTON (WBZ) — A police officer, with Massachusetts ties, was killed in the line of duty in Utah Saturday.

Provo Utah Police Officer Joe Shinners was shot and killed Saturday night while attempting to apprehend a fugitive.

The 29-year-old officer has two brothers who are also police officers. His father is retired Everett Fire Captain John Shinners. Everett firefighters local 143, on their Facebook page, called the officer’s death a terrible tragedy, and said their thoughts and prayers are with the Shinners family and the Provo Police Department.

Provo Detective Nick Dupaix remembers the character and integrity of Shinners.

“He was never in it for his own glory,” Dupaix said. “He was always out there working hard and he was willing to give everybody else the credit for it.”

Shinners leaves behind a wife and a 1-year-old son.
