BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — It was a milestone day for Red Sox slugger J.D. Martinez in Seattle yesterday.

Martinez's fourth-inning jack over the left-field wall was his second homer of the series but, more significant, the 1,000th hit of his career.

"I didn't even know until I came back in and the guys were telling me congrats and stuff," Martinez said. "I was like, 'Oh, that's pretty cool!' And I asked if they could get the ball, and I was able to get the ball, which was pretty cool."

Last year's fourth-place MVP finisher is raking to start the year. Martinez is batting .412, slugging better than 12-hundred, and he has seven RBI to go with his pair of home runs. He's also scored four runs.

But, Boston's struggled. Three losses in four tries in Seattle. The club will try to do better in Oakland when that four-game set begins tonight. David Price will take the mound in the 10:07 p.m. start.
