New England Casket Company Plans To Rebuild

BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — The owners of the destroyed New England Casket company hope to rebuild likely not in East Boston.

Back on March 15, the New England Casket company went to nine alarms and destroyed the 75-year-old family business on Bennington St.

More than a month after the fire, the owners, Lou Tobia Senior and Junior are still there, overseeing the cleaning of the debris from the site and figuring what's next.

Lou Tobia Jr. does indeed expect a next. Their biggest obstacle — finding a location that's big enough.

Tobia talked to WBZ NewsRadio’s Karyn Regal as construction equipment clanged in the background:

“ We don't think that we can build on the ground that are now," he said " And then from there we can potentially reach out to the mayor or business economic development and see how they can help us."

One location the company has looked at is the Malden Mill site in Lawrence, which burned in 1995 and whose employer rebuilt.

WBZ NewsRadio's Karyn Regal (@KarynRegal) reports.
