Massachusetts House Passes $42.7B State Budget Plan

BOSTON (AP) Massachusetts House lawmakers have wrapped up debate on a $42.7 billion state budget plan for the new fiscal year.

The spending plan approved Thursday doesn't include new taxes, although Democratic leaders haven't ruled out considering taxes later in the legislative session.

Democratic leaders also blocked consideration of amendments dealing with the legalization of sports betting in Massachusetts during the debate.

Critics faulted House leaders for allowing vast stretches of the four-day debate to be conducted behind closed doors.

House lawmakers had to work their way through more than 1,300 proposed amendments before approving the budget. The Massachusetts Senate is expected to take up its version of the state budget later in the year.

The budget must be in place for the start of the new fiscal year on July 1.
