18-Year-Old Drowns In Medford Lake

MEDFORD, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — The body of a teenager was recovered from Upper Mystic Lake in Medford Monday.

Mass. State Police, Medford Police, and Tufts University Police, responded to the area shortly after 8:00 p.m. for the report of a possible drowning, the Middlesex District Attorney's office said in a release.

Divers recovered the 18-year-old Medford man from 20 feet of water. He was pronounced dead at Mass. General Hospital around 10:00 p.m. Monday night.

Officials indicate the man, who was unable to swim, was immediately in distress when he got in the water and sunk beneath the surface.

State Police, Medford Fire, Cambridge Fire, and Somerville Fire all responded to the short-lived search.

Witnesses say dozens of others were swimming in the area, despite signs indicating it's prohibited.
