Elton John is setting the record straight about why Meghan Markle and Prince Harry recently used a private jet to vacation at his home in the south of France. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have come under fire recently for using private jets to travel for personal vacations. The pair travel Ibiza and Nice via private jet in August, which had critics calling them hypothetical for their environmental advocacy.
British Labour MP Teresa Pearce called on Harry and Meghan in The Sun to "lead by example" when it comes to important environmental issues. “Given the position they have taken publicly about being responsible on climate change, this does seem an anomaly which they should look at. It’s up to all of us to cut our carbon emissions, and the number of flights we take a year," Pearce told the outlet. That is really important — and someone as high profile as that should lead by example. I find this quite surprising because it doesn’t fit with their public image and the way they’re so concerned about the planet and the environment.”
While the Palace rarely comments on media scrutiny, the Benny and the Jets singer has decided to publicly defend Meghan and Harry. Elton took to Twitter to clear air and reassure the Sussex's critics knew their flight was "carbon neutral."
Here's Elton's statement in full:
I am deeply distressed by today’s distorted and malicious account in the press surrounding the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s private stay at my home in Nice last week. Prince Harry’s Mother, Diana Princess Of Wales was one of my dearest friends. I feel a profound sense of obligation to protect Harry and his family from the unnecessary press intrusion that contributed to Diana’s untimely death. After a hectic year continuing their hard work and dedication to charity, David and I wanted the young family to have a private holiday inside the safety and tranquility of our home. To maintain a high level of much-needed protection, we provided them with a private jet flight. To support Prince Harry’s commitment to the environment, we ensured their flight was carbon neutral, by making the appropriate contribution to Carbon Footprint™. I highly respect and applaud both Harry and Meghan’s commitment to charity and I’m calling on the press to cease these relentless and untrue assassinations on their character that are spuriously crafted on an almost daily basis.
It seems unlikely that Harry and Meghan will throw their own two cents into the public discourse about their private vacation arrangements. Hopefully their critics are assuaged by the knowledge that they made an effort to make sure their private jet was carbon neutral.
