Rhode Island Man Arrested In Massachusetts Fatal Hit And Run

SEEKONK, Mass. (AP) — The Rhode Island man charged with leaving the scene after striking and killing a woman walking with her 11-year-old son in Massachusetts has waived rendition.

Authorities say 27-year-old Jeremy Schmidt, of East Providence, appeared in a Rhode Island court on Friday on a fugitive from justice charge and agreed to return to Massachusetts. He faces arraignment in Taunton District Court later Friday on charges including leaving the scene of a fatal accident.

Police say 37-year-old Antonieta Vargas was walking with her son in a Seekonk at about 7 p.m. Thursday when she was struck. The boy wasn’t injured.

Police say the driver left the scene, but Schmidt was arrested at about 4:30 a.m. Friday.

His attorney had no comment outside court.
