DANVERS, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Danvers residents enjoyed a tree lighting ceremony over the weekend thanks to the generosity of two local brothers.
Back in 1984, George Toomey bought a Christmas tree for his family home in the town, and he kept it alive through the winter.
“Dug the whole for the springtime. Come springtime, we planted it — 1985,” George said.
Over the next 35 years, that spruce grew so tall it started to threaten power lines in the front yard. So, George and his brother Richard decided to donate it to the town.
The tree is now the central holiday attraction in Danvers Square.
“In 1984, it started life as a Christmas tree — 2 feet tall. And it’s going to finish its life as a Christmas tree 35 feet tall,” Richard said.
