Somerset Women Dies After Being Mauled By Dog

SOMERSET, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — The Bristol County District Attorney’s Office says that a Somerset woman has died after being mauled by a dog.

The incident happened shortly before 5:30 p.m. on Friday.

The victim’s daughter said her mother was having a seizure when the family’s dog attacked.

Authorities tased the dog when they got to the scene. The victim, identified as Melissa Astacio, was then taken to Rhode Island Hospital.

Astacio was known to have suffered from seizures.

Authorities believe the dog to be an 8-year-old pit bull. It was placed in quarantine at a facility run by the Swansea Animal Rescue.

The incident remains under investigation.
