BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Worknesh Degefa of Ethiopia has won the 2019 Boston Marathon Elite Womens' Division Monday with an official time of 2:23:30.

Edna Kiplagat of Kenya finished in 2nd place with a time of 2:24:14 and American Jordan Hasay finished in 3rd with a time of 2:25:20.

Degefa pulled ahead of the pack in Ashland early in the race and never looked back, keeping a steady pace throughout the race.

For a good part of the race, Degefa was 2-2.5 minutes ahead of her nearest challenger.

While crossing the finish line, she made the sign of the cross several times—and after she finished the race, she dropped to her knees and kissed the ground.
