Katie Couric Recalls 'Uncomfortable' Denzel Washington Interview In 2004

Katie Couric took the open book approach when recalling an "uncomfortable" interview that she conducted with Denzel Washington in 2004.

In the TV anchor's Monday (April 27) appearance on an episode of the "Everything Iconic With Danny Pellegrino" podcast, Couric, 63, detailed the awkward promotional interview for the film, The Manchurian Candidate, which also included Meryl Streep. Things went south when Couric asked Washington if he agreed with the notion that "Hollywood folks should stick to acting." "I don’t know what Hollywood folks are, first of all," he said at the time. "Hollywood is a town that has some stars on the sidewalk. I don’t know anybody from there. So, I don’t — that's like saying — calling you a 'type' of folks. I’m not a Hollywood folk. I don’t know who they are."

Couric attempted to rephrase the question, before she was cut off by Washington and the two went into a back-and-forth dance. "Ah, there you go," Washington interrupted. "Am I one of those people? Hmmm, isn’t that interesting?"

"I think he totally misconstrued a question I asked and kind of jumped all over me. It was so uncomfortable because he was doing it with Meryl Streep…" Couric recalled during the podcast episode. "I just remember leaving it and thinking, 'God' … I don’t think I said anything wrong … I don’t know what happened. Anyway, I think he must have been having a really bad day, because he later wrote a big check to my colon cancer organization, which I thought was super sweet.”

"I love him. I admire him so much, he’s one of my favorite actors, but I remember walking out feeling kind of shaken that he had gone after me in a way that was completely weirdly uncalled for," she continued.
