19-Year-Old Charged With Revere Murder Over Stolen Backpack

REVERE, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — An East Boston man is facing murder charges for the fatal shooting of Yaseen Butt, 20, of Revere late Sunday evening.

The shooting occurred in front of the Twist and Shake ice cream shop on Revere Beach Boulevard.

Police say Felix Martinez, 19, of East Boston stole two backpacks from Butt and a companion near Garfield Avenue. Butt gathered a group of friends to find Martinez and retrieve the backpacks. They discovered Martinez with one of the backpacks among a group of males on Revere Beach Boulevard and the two sides began fighting.

During the confrontation, Martinez allegedly attempted to grab a gun from another individual, which led to Butt running away. Martinez and his group chased Butt down, began to kick and beat him, then Martinez allegedly shot him.

Martinez and the group fled the scene and were captured by security cameras while running into a nearby MBTA station.

Butt was rushed to Massachusetts General Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

In addition to murder charges, Martinez was also arraigned in Chelsea District Court on Thursday on charges of assault with a dangerous weapon and two counts of armed robbery. He is being held without bail.
