MALDEN, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — An HBO pilot is preparing to film in Malden on Thursday for an untitled project surrounding the life of cooking personality and author Julia Child.
The filming will take place at Maplewood Meat Market on Maplewood Street. Crews for the pilot loaded equipment and gear off of trucks on Wednesday to prepare, as the street will close for filming on Thursday morning.
Kevin Duffy, Malden's Strategy and Business Development Officer, said the market is a good location for the project, which appears to take place in the 1950s and 1960s.
"The market has been there for a very long time," Duffy said. "It predates World War II, and this is actually the third owner of it."
Duffy said location scouts for the project reached out to city officials to coordinate production for the pilot.
"They were looking for a very particular kind of meat market," he said. "Something that looks like it would have been around in the 1960s, when Julia Child was working."
City officials are hoping the entire series will get picked up, after the city saw a decline in television production because of the Covid-19 pandemic.
"It's great to see that filming production is back up and running," Duffy said. "If the show gets picked up they do think this location will be frequently used and they will come back often."
