R.I. Votes To Drop "Providence Plantation" From Its Name

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Voters in Rhode Island have approved ballot Question 1, which changes the state's name.

With nearly 53% of the vote, the state will be dropping "Providence Plantation" from it's name. Now, it will simply be "Rhode Island."

Advocates say the change removes references to slavery from the state's name.
