U.S. Education Secretary Meets With Mayor Janey, Local School Officials

BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Boston Mayor Kim Janey and Boston Public Schools Superintendent Brenda Cassellius played host to U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona on Tuesday.

Cardona is touring the nation as part of the Biden Administration's "Help is Here" School Reopening Tour, and started at South Boston's Tynan Elementary School. Cardona stressed the importance of reopening schools.

"My primary goal right now is ensuring that we safely reopen schools as quickly as possible, or at least allow for in-person learning...reopening them so that students can be in the classrooms like what we saw today, that is the best equity lever we can pull."

Tynan School principal Leslie Gant said getting the children back in school was a challenge. "We had to convince families it was safe, families that don't trust the system already," she said.

Cardona also visited a school staff-only vaccination site while in Boston. He will be visiting a school in Delaware on the second leg of his tour.
