Gov. Baker To Ease Mask Mandate, Reopen More Businesses In Coming Weeks

BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker announced Tuesday the state will ease more coronavirus restrictions in the coming weeks. Here’s a look at the timeline.

April 30

The state’s mask mandate will be relaxed for some outdoor settings. Face coverings will only be required outside in public when it is not possible to socially distance, and at other times required by sector-specific guidance.

However, masks will still be required at all times indoors at public places. They will also be required at all events, even if they are outdoors or at a private home, except for when eating or drinking.

At smaller gatherings in private homes, masks are recommended but not required.

The state will also get rid of the $300 fine for not wearing masks.

May 10

Large venues, such as indoor and outdoor stadiums, arenas, and ballparks can increase capacity limits to 25%.

Amusement parks, theme parks, and outdoor water parks will also be allowed to reopen at a 50% capacity after submitting safety plans to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health.

Road races and other large, outdoor organized athletic events will also be allowed to take placed with staggered starts. Also, youth and adult amateur tournaments will be allowed for moderate and high risk sports.

Finally, singing will be allowed indoors with strict distancing requirements at performance venues, restaurants, event venues, and other businesses.

May 29

Depending on public health and vaccination data, gathering limits will increase to 200 people indoors and 250 people outdoors for event venues, public settings, and private settings.

Street festivals, parades, and agricultural festivals will be allowed to open at 50% capacity after submitting safety plans to the local board of health.

Bars, beer gardens, breweries, wineries, and distilleries can reopen with seated service only, a 90 minute limit, and no dance floors.

Also, depending on public health data, restaurants can begin serving alcohol without food, and maximum table size will increase to 10 people.

August 1

Dance clubs and night clubs will be allowed to reopen, as well as indoor water parks and ball pits.

Saunas, hot tubs, steam rooms at fitness centers, health clubs, and other facilities will be allowed to reopen.

All industry restrictions will also be lifted, and capacity limits will increase to 100% for all industries. However, businesses will be encouraged to keep following best practices.

The gathering limit will remain the same.
