A Western Pennsylvania favorite is set to become the first U.S. grocery and convenience store chain to accept payment through PayPal and Venmo.
Giant Eagle, Inc. announced its intention to accept payment through both applications at its 474 supermarket and GetGo convenience store locations in a news release obtained by WPXI on Thursday (August 12).
The grocery chain said its research revealed 59% of customers surveyed have been using digital wallet services more frequently during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, 63% of the participants said they were more likely to shop at stores offering digital payments, while 73% said they want to be able to pay the same way in-store as they do online.
Giant Eagle will allow its customers to open their PayPal or Venmo mobile apps and click the "Scan" button and select the "show to pay" option when checking out their groceries and/or items.
PayPal users can pay using stored debit or credit cards, bank accounts, PayPal balance or PayPal Credit, while Venmo shoppers can pay using their stored debit or credit cards, bank accounts, Venmo balance or Venmo credit cards.
Giant Eagle's addition of PayPal and Venmo as new payment options are part of the grocery chain's partnership with Blackhawk Network, according to WPXI.
