MARLBOROUGH (WBZ NewsRadio) — A Tornado Warning was issued by the National Weather Service late Monday morning for a patch of Middlesex and Worcester counties along I-495.
The service confirmed that a tornado had touched down outside of 495 in Berlin and Marlborough at 12:06 PM, and warned everyone in the area to get to shelter. The storm was churning north at 15 miles-per-hour when weather spotters saw it. The National Weather Service later told WBZ NewsRadio that the tornado touched down on Cedar Hill Street in Marlborough. After investigating, the NWS said the tornado was an EF0, and that it took down a tree along Cedar Hill Street that damaged a car. No one was injured or killed.
The weather service said more brief tornadoes couldn't be ruled out, and the warning was extended through 1:30 PM, and then through 2:15 over a wide swath of north-central Massachusetts. Included in the warning were two storms that could produce more tornadoes, one originating near Stow, and another over Ayer.
The service said flying debris were the biggest threat with the storm.
Accuweather Meteorologist Bob Larson told WBZ NewsRadio on Monday that it is not uncommon to see tornados appear on the eastern side of tropical depressions like Henri, which is where eastern Massachusetts is now.
