BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) – The state’s first lady is helping to kick-off an annual gift drive that helps thousands of children involved with the Massachusetts Department of Children and Families (DCF).
The Wonderfund, which First Lady Lauren Baker helped develop several years ago, aims to provide the 53,000 children involved with the DCF with gifts to open during the holidays. Baker specifically said these children and their families have been through some difficult times in their lives.
“They don’t always have access to a holiday gift intended just for them,” Baker said. “This holiday gift drive through the Wonderfund makes that possible for these kids.”

Through the organization’s partnership with the DCF, social workers connect donors to a personal holiday wish list from each child, or children, they choose to sponsor. Baker said they intend to do even more this year as these families are still struggling with some of the fallout from the pandemic.
“Families engaged with DCF were enduring some tough times to begin with,” she said. “We have been really, really honored and grateful by the generosity of the people of Massachusetts toward these children and even during the darkest days of the pandemic, we received thousands and thousands of holiday gifts.”
